Drive-by posting while at work -

A very well-written Salon.com article on "Xena."

Thoughts? Reactions? I ran across another article (umm... somewhere) on the progression of female characters on TV, and would you believe that not a single sf/f character made it to the list? Laura Petrie, Mary and Rhoda, Murphy Brown, and then Carrie Bradshaw. Interesting how mainstream media just doesn't want to admit to sf/f characters, even when (IMHO) they often provide the best examples of feminist thought.

But, since this is an open forum for all female characters, what do you all think are the most significant female characters on TV?

I love this article! It crystalises so much of what I feel about Xena as a show.

I think Servalan from Blake's 7 has to be one of the standout women on TV - she played an amazing, powerful and at times quite scary villain who was nevertheless very sympathetic. Her character became President of the Galaxy, and her buzz-cut hair style was pretty ground breaking in the late Seventies.

I'm glad you liked it! It was kind of a lucky shot, really - it came up as a false search result while I was looking for something else entirely. Serendipity!

I've heard so many people talking about Blake's 7 - I wish it was more readily available where I am! Servalan sounds like quite the fascinating character. *G*
